Whether you’re jetting off to somewhere exotic, exploring a UK coastline, or heading on a short break with family or friends, or even just having a staycation at home with the kids, preparing for holidays can be a mix of excitement and overwhelm.
Holidays aren’t just about packing a suitcase and printing tickets. They are also about managing your inner world – your thoughts, feelings, and nervous system – so that you can actually enjoy your time away.
The Emotional Side of Travel
Many of us feel anxious before we go away – and not just about what to pack! Things like:
- Worrying about getting to the airport or station on time
- Feeling flustered when navigating new places or transport systems
- Anxiety about asking for help in unfamiliar environments
- Fear of flying or motion sickness
- A general sense of unease or lack of confidence in the build-up
- And worrying that everyone will be happy and their needs catered for
All of this is completely normal by the way. Just take a deep breath and I hope that some of the tips below will help you feel more in control.
Your Holistic Travel Kit: The Essentials
It’s not just the emotional side that matters – physical wellbeing plays a huge part in how we enjoy our time away. Here are some of my favourite travel tips:
Start with your gut health
A strong immune system starts in the gut. I recommend upping your intake of probiotics for a couple of weeks before going abroad – this can help your body cope with new foods, different bacteria, and travel-related stress. Probiotic-rich foods (like kefir, sauerkraut or live yoghurt) or a quality supplement can make a big difference.
Eating well
Eating well on holiday helps you stay energised and comfortable – but if you have dietary requirements, navigating local food can be tricky. We recommend:
- Preparing printed cards with your dietary needs in the local language (use online translation tools).
- Bringing a few healthy snacks with you, especially if travelling long distances or to remote areas.
- Staying hydrated – and being mindful of water and ice sources depending on where you’re travelling.
Prepare a natural medicine bag
Include natural remedies to support you on the go. Think:
- Homeopathic remedies for travel sickness, tummy bugs, insect bites or sleep support (Nux Vomica, Arnica, Cocculus, and Apis are great staples).
- Rescue Remedy or a calming flower essence for travel nerves.
- Ginger chews or peppermint oil for nausea and digestion.
- Magnesium spray or flakes to help ease achy muscles or promote better sleep.
Pack a paraben-free sunscreen
Choose a natural, mineral-based SPF that’s kind to your skin and the environment. Look for labels that say paraben-free, reef-safe, and non-nano zinc oxide for broad-spectrum protection without harsh chemicals. Tropic skincare do a great one.
Avoiding Holiday Burnout
The pressure to make the most of every minute can sometimes backfire. Maybe you find yourself walking more than usual, eating, and drinking more than your body is used to, socialising constantly, or staying up far later than your normal routine.
Think ahead:
- Will you want some downtime in the day to rest?
- Do you have quiet activities or solo time built in?
- Can you say “no thanks” to some outings without guilt?
It’s OK to protect your energy. Speak up about your needs and build space for actual rest.
Wishing you a fantastic time– wherever you’ve got planned this summer hols.
